  1. Greek `baptize again' a member of any of 
  2. various 16th-century radical Protestant 
  3. sects. They believed in adult rather than 
  4. child baptism, and sought to establish 
  5. utopian communities. Anabaptist groups 
  6. spread rapidly in N Europe, particularly in 
  7. Germany, and were widely persecuted. Notable 
  8. Anabaptists included those in Moravia (the 
  9. Hutterites) and Thomas Muntzer (1489-1525), a 
  10. peasant leader who was executed for fomenting 
  11. an uprising in Muhlhausen (now Mulhouse in E 
  12. France). In Munster, Germany, Anabaptists 
  13. controlled the city 1534-35. A number of 
  14. Anabaptist groups, such as the Mennonites, 
  15. Amish, and Hutterites, emigrated to N 
  16. America, where they became known for their 
  17. simple way of life and pacifism.
